Why Do Appliances Fail?

Modern appliances incorporate sensitive electronics to perform their specific functions. Just like computers, they are extremely sensitive to their operating environments. If your appliances are failing prematurely or unexpectedly, one major contributing factor to their failure is due to poor power quality.

Service entrance surge protection devices (SPDs), while important, are simply not enough to protect sensitive electronics. If there is no protection downstream on the electrical wiring system, every switching event, internal surge, and utility disturbance, can directly impact the functionality and longevity of all things electrical, including LED lights. Over time, this damage accumulates until costly repairs or replacements become necessary.

All inductive loads within a building generate electrical disturbances. When an HVAC system or even a hairdryer turn on and off, they create surges that will directly affect the performance and service life of appliances. Once created, these disturbances will propagate throughout the electrical system, contributing to the degradation and eventual failure of all things electrical, including appliances. It is common to see random, unexplained issues or even failures for no specific reason because of this gradual damage.

This is why a layered surge protection approach is paramount for the protection of sensitive electronics. If there is only surge protection at the service entrance, surges generated within the home are still able to damage every electronic component, including in appliances, within the building.
