"I'm a fourth-generation electrician who has been in the industry for almost 30 years. Growing up in the industry, I always thought of surge protection as more of a gimmick; something you install to provide a placebo effect for the clients, providing them more of an emotional comfort of protection.

Last year, I provided a generator to a contractor of ours for temporary power for his jobsite, since getting permanent power was going to be a few months out. During construction, the generator worked great. Once we wired a well pump with a VFD to the generator, we could not keep the generator operational. It just continued to automatically shut down. The longest we had it running was three minutes.  We tried everything we could think of, including changing the frequency on the VFD. Nothing worked.
