Training - Surge Protection, Grounding, and Power Quality

Transient Protection Design provides application-focused surge protection and power quality training for engineers, architects, designers, electricians, systems integrators, and facility teams. Each session is tailored to your group’s technical background and project requirements, from custom residential systems to commercial facilities, industrial applications, and interconnected campuses.

Training Topics

  • Power and Data Surge Protection
Product selection, installation considerations, and placement throughout electrical distribution, communications, and control systems.
  • Grounding, Bonding, and System Design
Coordinating surge protection system design across equipment, buildings, and outdoor applications.
  • Voltage Regulation
Understanding voltage sags, swells, and brownouts, and where regulation is appropriate.
  • Power Quality Programs
Bringing surge protection, voltage regulation, and backup power together using the TPD Power Quality Pyramid.

Start with your questions or a current project. Sessions can focus on one topic or bring electrical and low-voltage teams together to review shared concerns. Drawings, photos, and application questions are welcome.

Do You Have a Power Quality Program?

The TPD Power Quality Program focuses on putting appropriate measures in place to prevent or limit the effects of imperfect power. Our training helps your team understand this coordinated approach and apply it to practical loss prevention and risk mitigation decisions.

The TPD Power Quality Pyramid organizes that approach into three levels:

  • Foundation: TPD Surge Protection
Proper grounding and bonding, combined with surge protection and power filtering, form the foundation. We explain how coordinated power surge protection and data surge protection help address disturbances reaching equipment through its electrical connections.
  • Advanced Protection: TPD Voltage Regulation
The next level addresses voltage fluctuations, such as sags, swells, and brownouts. Training covers how voltage regulation helps maintain voltage within the equipment’s operating range and where it fits into the overall protection plan.
  • Power Outage Protection: Backup Solutions
Generators, battery storage, and UPS systems help maintain power during outages and support continued operation. We discuss their roles and operating differences, along with how they fit alongside surge protection and voltage regulation.

Together, these measures provide a framework for protecting equipment, reducing service interruptions, and managing the costs associated with imperfect power.
