Our Story

Our Roots Are in Surge Protection and our Focus Is Power Quality.

Transient Protection Design began as a surge protection company with a practical purpose: help customers solve the electrical problems damaging their equipment and disrupting their systems.

For more than 30 years, that purpose has guided our work in homes, businesses, and industrial facilities. As we helped customers troubleshoot failures, compare products, and protect their equipment, our experience grew and our approach became more holistic.

Experience That Expanded Our Approach

Years of troubleshooting taught us to look at the conditions surrounding a failure. What else was happening when the equipment stopped working? How was it connected to other systems? Was surge protection in place? Could voltage fluctuations, grounding and bonding, or another power quality issue be contributing to the problem?

Answering those questions meant looking beyond an individual device to understand the electrical system around it. That work shaped our evolution into a power quality company. Surge protection remains a foundation of what we do, supported by a broader understanding of how power conditions affect equipment and which solutions fit the application.

Decades of Working Through Real Problems

John Groninger and Tim Fazio are the managing members of TPD. John brings more than four decades of experience to this work. Tim has worked alongside John for 33 years, and the two have been business partners for more than 25 years. They work with experienced engineers and power quality professionals, many with 25 to 30 years or more in the field.

Together, we have helped customers work through hundreds of applications, from protecting individual pieces of equipment to coordinating protection across buildings and interconnected systems. Our work has included product selection, design support, troubleshooting, and the development of new products and application-specific protection packages.

Those experiences inform the recommendations we make and the educational resources we share. They also help us ask useful questions when a customer knows something is wrong but is unsure where to begin.

The Same Purpose, a Broader Perspective

Today, customers come to TPD with recurring equipment failures, difficult specifications, new construction projects, and questions about protecting existing systems. The location and complexity vary, but our starting point is consistent: understand the problem and help determine the next step.

Our history is a progression from surge protection to a more complete approach to power quality, built through decades of helping customers solve problems.
