Surge Protect Lighting Systems

LED lighting systems require surge protection with EMI/RFI filtration.  We are seeing driver failure starting in just two years of use.  Drivers are simply power supplies that reduce line voltage down to 24 volt or lower to power the LED bulbs.  Anytime your people are in a facility that has upgraded to LED lighting, they should ask the customer if any thought has been given to protecting the LED lighting system.  Owners are interested in protecting electronic ballasts and LED lighting systems from lightning and internally generated transients.  TPD has power filters to protect lighting systems, and also has surge protection products to protect all other systems and equipment, including HVAC, building automation, POS, phone, data, security, etc.  If you are interested in protecting anything in addition to lighting please let us know and we will forward you the appropriate information.

Today, all facility lighting panels should be protected.  Just as everyone protects the circuit boards and power supplies in computers and large screen televisions with plug in strip surge suppressors, so to should everyone protect the circuit boards in electronic ballasts and in the drivers feeding LED lighting systems with surge and lightning protection products.  IEEE also sees the need for protecting electronic ballasts. Return On Investment Caser Studies

The case studies reveal the quick return on investment using quality surge protection offered by TPD.  While the ballast manufactures will tell you that electronic ballasts should last 15 years or longer, we visit many end users who are replacing ballast every two or three years, or even more frequently.  Likewise, nobody will get maximum life out of LED drivers and bulbs without quality surge suppression with enhanced filtering.  The key to reducing electrical maintenance costs and extending equipment life is the effectiveness of the enhanced transient filter in cleaning up the power.  Our units have much better filtering (very important in protecting electronic loads and getting a faster return on investment) and have a much better warranty (25 and 30 years vs 10 years) than the competitor units.  This gives our suppression/filter units a quicker payback, and with 25 and 30 year unlimited free replacement warranties, life cycle savings are huge.

For branch and lighting panels, in most cases you will want to use the TPX units with enhanced filtering.  Whether the circuit boards are in electronic ballasts or in computers, even small transients can affect them.  Surge suppression is for the medium and large transients and is necessary to protect equipment from large external transients like lightning and power company surges.  But, filtering is the key to protecting electronics from day to day internally generated transients.
